Most of these travel in the bloodstream directly to the liver, where they are processed and released back into the bloodstream for delivery to body cells. Nutrients from the foods you eat are absorbed in the digestive tract. The specific functions of blood also include defense, and maintenance of homeostasis, such as distributing heat where it is needed. The primary function of blood is to deliver oxygen and nutrients to, and remove wastes from, the body cells but that is only the beginning of the story. This fluid, which is mostly water, suspends the formed elements and enables them to circulate throughout the body within the cardiovascular system. The extracellular matrix, called plasma, makes blood unique among connective tissues because it is fluid. The cellular elements-referred to as the formed elements-include red blood cells (RBCs), white blood cells (WBCs), and cell fragments called platelets. Like all connective tissues, it is made up of cellular elements and an extracellular matrix. Recall that blood is a connective tissue. Name the fluid component of blood and the three major types of formed elements, and identify their relative proportions in a blood sample.Identify the primary proteins and other solutes present in blood plasma.Identify the primary functions of blood in transportation, defense, and maintenance of homeostasis.Identify the primary functions of blood, its fluid and cellular components, and its characteristics By the end of this section, you will be able to:

Such was the case with the Legacy Series XD Subcompact. While there are exceptions (see my Taurus Spectrum review for one example,) the modern pistols just seem to work. I’ve tested a lot of pistols over the years and most brands of modern handguns tend to run correctly right out of the box. ReliabilityĪs with most modern striker-fired pistols, I had high expectations for the reliability of this pistol. While I’ve never had a problem with a Glock or Smith & Wesson trigger, I still appreciate the smooth characteristics of the XD trigger.Ī few more things stood out to me: reliability, recoil and reloads. Additionally, the pivot safety in the trigger seemed more rounded and less likely to pinch. I find the trigger face isn’t as wide as those found on some other guns. If you are part of that group, you might like the XD trigger. I’ve heard a lot of people complain about the triggers on other companies’ striker-fired pistols. Check out my article called The Complete Springfield Armory XD Night Sights Guide if you are interested in swapping out to something different. The sights are dovetailed, meaning you can replace them if you like. If you are not enamored with the SA XD SC sights, no worries. Actual prices could be even lower at your dealer. CaliberĪs I referenced earlier, the pistol is affordable with a suggested retail price of $399. As I mentioned above, the company only offers this gun for the 9mm cartridge in standard capacity models. Here are the specifications on the Legacy Series Springfield XD Subcompact pistol. The name Defenders Series is old branding that is no longer used. You may also see the Defend Your Legacy Series pistols labeled as Defenders Series handguns. Compared to the alternatives on the market, that is an exceptionally attractive price when you consider it comes with a full warranty and ample aftermarket support for things like holsters and sights. For a brand new, factory production XD Subcompact pistol the suggested retail price is only $399. By streamlining the production process, the company is able to offer these guns at rock bottom pricing. Memorizing just a handful of these shortcuts will enable you to work in a more productive and efficient way. Now that we’ve covered what shortcuts are, it’s time to start using them! Below we’ve listed a range of the most useful and common key combinations that will help with drawing, modelling, editing and more. SolidWorks Keyboard Shortcuts: The Essentials There are 4 options: part, assembly, drawing and sketch.įunnily enough, you access the shortcut bar by using a shortcut! Simply type ‘ S‘ and it should present itself. In other words, the software anticipates the type of tools you might require at that particular moment and provides a relevant menu. It’s context-sensitive, meaning different commands will appear depending on the type of work you’re producing. The latter is an extremely handy menu that provides quick access to some of the most useful commands. If you forget a certain combination or require more functions, however, you can search within the CommandManager or use the shortcut bar. Most can be executed simply by typing the correct key while the program is running. Unlike AutoCAD commands, SolidWorks shortcuts don’t necessarily have to go through a command line interface. This is because the SolidWorks desktop software is only available on the Windows platform. You’ll find all of the shortcuts and commands listed within the CommandManager, which is docked at the top of the screen if you’re using the default interface.ĭo note that the shortcuts are based on the layout of Windows keyboards. Rather than scrolling through various menus to find it, simply type ‘ G‘ and it will appear. Let’s say you’re in the middle of editing a model and you need to use the magnifying glass feature. Using shortcuts saves a lot of time and effort because it means you don’t have to search for the specific function you need-they come to you! Īs we briefly mentioned, commands and shortcuts are codes (ranging from single letters to a couple of words or keys) that users type to produce a certain action. And as we have detailed below, this essentially means there are no dedicated macOS shortcuts. In this regard, while you can seamlessly operate the software using a macOS device, you are essentially operating a Windows computer. This solution allows you to remotely control a Windows computer remotely via Amazon Appstream. However, you can open and use SolidWorks online product trial using your a browser on a macOS device. This means there is no dedicated desktop software for the macOS. Since its initial release in the mid-1990s, SolidWorks has always only been available on the Windows platform. Regularly updated to utilise the latest technologies, today SolidWorks enables CAD users to create auto-generated 2D drawings, build advanced 3D models and perform various simulations and analyses. Two years later, it was acquired by tech giant Dassault Systèmes and became their flagship product. SolidWorks was originally released in 1995, and was one of the first affordable and easy to use 3D CAD softwares on the market. Display & Editing Shortcuts for SolidWorks.Drawing, Sketching & Modelling Shortcuts for SolidWorks.SolidWorks Keyboard Shortcuts: The Essentials. What are SolidWorks Keyboard Shortcuts?. In this article we’re going to explore some of the most useful SolidWorks shortcuts to have in your repertoire. These handy little commands improve efficiency and can drastically speed up your work process. Once you can handle the basics, you’ll discover there are plenty of hacks that can make shifting between SolidWorks’ various functions a breeze. Indeed, don’t be surprised if your first ventures into the SolidWorks world leave you feeling a little overwhelmed. We urge you not to give up, though! The downside to the ‘one software fits all’ nature of this program is that it is quite complex and thus it may take you some time to get to grips with it. Whether you’re a machinist, manufacturer or designer, SolidWorks comes with features that will serve your needs. The highly sophisticated software includes a vast range of capabilities, helping people from a range of sectors produce high quality, cutting-edge work. Dassault Systèmes’ SolidWorks is often the 3D CAD program of choice for those in the design industry (and beyond) whose main focus is solid modelling. In a perfect business world, cost-plus pricing would work every time – but for many businesses, competition will drive a need to use different strategies, at least some of the time. One big downside to cost-plus pricing is that it pays little attention to external factors, such as competitor prices, which could profoundly affect your ability to sell. You should check the industry-standard markups that apply to your business before choosing a multiplier to work out a cost-plus price. Moving on to markup, it’s important to note that profit margins can vary widely between industries. Remember to factor in a certain amount to cover eventualities such as a small percentage of sales being refunded to dissatisfied customers. Be thorough in your costing: follow the product from design to delivery, and note every cost that you can. choosing a markup multiplier that’s appropriate for your industry.įinding the unit price for your product or service means adding up the costs of labour, materials, overheads and other costs that go into providing that product to the customer.accurately costing your unit price and. With that said, there are two sensitive components you need to get right for cost-plus pricing: The prices take into account your costs AND a profit margin, and as such you should never lose money on the sales you make.Īnother benefit to this type of pricing strategy is that it’s very easy to master: just add up your costs and then times the unit cost by your desired markup multiplier. The industry-standard markup for fashion is about 2.5X – so if the brand multiplied the unit cost by that multiplier, then the jacket would be priced for retail at £500.Ĭost-plus pricing has the advantage of basing your prices in the economic realities of your business. In cost-plus pricing, the product’s price is the unit cost (how much it costs to produce and deliver one unit of the product), plus a certain amount of markup which gives the business its profit margin.įor example, a luxury fashion designer might work out that it costs £200 to produce one unit of a jacket. 7 types of pricing strategyĮven if you haven’t heard of cost-plus pricing before, you’re probably familiar with the concept. In this guide, we’ll tell you about seven popular types of pricing strategies, and how to choose the right strategy to set prices for your business. Not only will your choice of price affect your profits and sales it could also determine which customers you acquire, alter the competitive dynamics between businesses in your industry, and redefine people’s perceptions of your brand. Setting the right price for a product or service is crucial. Earth Defense Force 4.
At this stage, I don’t strive for perfection. I create some rough sketches, presenting the dragons’ figure in a simplified, stylized manner. One wing will be almost hidden behind another. My dragon will be lying or sitting on a hill. However, it’s still possible to find a pose that is both interesting and compact. Sketching Dragon PosesĪs long as I’m working with a relatively small A4 paper size, I won’t be able to depict a dragon in a monumental posture - flying or sitting with its wings outstretched. This layout seems more fitting to the pose and composition that I have in mind. I’m going to depict a four-legged dragon. Still, knowing about the nuances may be useful. As you probably see by now, there is no clear answer as to how many legs a dragon should have. If we rely on examples of creatures that actually exist (or existed in the past), this point of view is quite sensible. Animals with the ability to fly have sacrificed two of their limbs that evolved into wings. The layout of all vertebrates follows a simple principle: four limbs plus a head. No creature found in nature has four legs and wings at the same time. On the other hand, there is an opinion that a model of a dragon with two legs plus wings is more correct from a “biological” standpoint. For example, in the heraldry of other European countries, it is entirely acceptable to have dragon-like creatures with two legs being called dragons. In many languages, cultures, and contexts, we won’t find a clear distinction between the two creatures. However, wyverns are quite similar to dragons. (Just remember Game of Thrones television series.) That sometimes causes heated arguments whether a particular creature is a dragon or a wyvern. If we rely on the number of legs as the main distinguishing feature, it is possible to say that wyverns are more often represented in movies these days. Other features that were commonly attributed to wyverns are the inability to breathe fire and strongly pronounced fierceness. It was believed that dragons have four limbs and wings, and wyverns have only two back legs and wings. However, since the sixteenth century, English, Scottish, and Irish heraldry began to distinguish between a “dragon” and a “wyvern”. Originally, dragons could have any number of legs. This question may seem strange, but we have to dwell on this topic just for a moment. In this tutorial, I’m going to show you that it’s possible to get a moderate variation of the line width using the same pen. However, if you prefer having a greater choice of line width options, feel free to use a variety of different pens. The balance between a realistic look and stylization is always up to you.įor this project, we’ll need a graphite pencil, an eraser, an ink liner (my choice is 0.1 number), and drawing paper. I’m going to keep my dragon’s appearance closer to the image found in western culture. Feel free to use the tutorial to create a base for your own dragon, changing or adding the details according to your vision. Nobody has ever seen a real dragon! This means that we enjoy a wide range of options while designing our creature. It’s necessary to emphasize that dragons are fictional and so are any assumptions about their anatomy. Dragons in eastern cultures are usually portrayed as wingless serpentine creatures. In western cultures, since the High Middle Ages, dragons have been depicted as creatures that have four legs, wings, and horns – capable of breathing fire. The earliest dragons that are known today resemble giant snakes. Martinīeliefs about appearance and characteristics of dragons vary from region to region. It has never existed, but the very image of dragon-like beasts is so familiar to us! In this lesson, we’ll take a look at drawing a dragon with pen and ink.ĭragon motifs appear frequently in modern literature, particularly within the fantasy genre. A dragon is a legendary creature that can be found in the folklore of virtually all cultures around the globe. This will help us visualize the structural arrangement inside the molecule in a better manner and also aid in understanding several properties that it can exhibit. We will use Valence Shell Electron Pair Repulsion (VSEPR) theory to decipher the 3- dimensional molecular geometry of the given molecule. Lewis Structure has its own limitations and therefore we will now use a different and modified approach. Having a 2D idea about a molecule is not enough to understand the nature of chemical bonding. We have a single bond between H and F due to sharing of an electron pair. We can hence confirm that we have got our correct Lewis Structure diagram for hydrogen fluoride. The formal charge for F = 7 – 0.5*2 – 6 = 0.Īs we can see, the elements are present in their least possible formal charge values. In HF, the formal charge for H = 1 – 0.5*2 – 0 = 0. We calculate formal charge via the following formula: The formal charge is defined as the charge we assign to a given atom inside a molecule following the assumption that electrons are shared equally among elements for bond formation. Step 5: Before we can confirm a certain Lewis Structure diagram, we have to check one last thing and that is the Formal Charge. In the diagram, we can see that hydrogen has got two electrons surrounding its atom and therefore this criterion has also been fulfilled. In the case of hydrogen, however, we see that it will have a tendency to have two electrons in its outermost shell as it will achieve configuration. As per the above sketch, we have fulfilled the required criterion. It says that the elements of group 1 to group 17 tend to achieve the octet outer shell electron configuration of noble gas elements.Īs we can see in HF, we have fluorine which will tend to have eight electrons in its valence shell. The octet rule deals with the octet fulfillment of valence shells of elements. Step 4: Now, we will check the octet rule. Let us have a look at the schematic sketch of HF after we have placed the dot electrons: Step 3: Lewis Structure is also known as an electron-dot structure since we use dot notations to represent the valence electrons surrounding the atoms. Hydrogen fluoride is a diatomic molecule, so here the concept of a central atom does not take place. Usually, the element having the least electronegativity value acts as the central atom. Step 2: Following the general procedure, now that we have found the valence electron number, we have to work out the element which will take the central position in the molecule. Total number of valence electrons in an HF molecule = 1 + 7 = 8. We can check the atomic number from the periodic table to confirm the valence electron number. Hydrogen belongs to period 1 and has 1 valence electron whereas Fluorine belongs to period 17(group of halogens) and therefore has 7 valence electrons. HF has one atom of hydrogen and one atom of fluorine. Step 1: We have to first count the total number of valence electrons inside a single hydrogen fluoride molecule. Let us discuss the step-by-step procedure to draw the Lewis Structure diagram for an HF molecule: the electrons in the outermost shell of the atom which take part in bonding. Here, we will talk about the valence electrons i.e. Lewis Structure gives a 2-dimensional sketch representing the distribution of electrons among atoms inside a molecule. To learn the nature of bonding inside a molecule of HF, we will first understand the concept of Lewis Structure so that we can draw the correct diagram. The science behind the formation of chemical bonds helps us understand several chemical and physical properties exhibited by different molecules and compounds. The below reaction provides us the procedure of formation of HF:ĬaF2 + H2SO4 -–> CaSO4 + 2HF (endothermic reaction)Ĭhemical bonding is the study of atomic attraction that results in the formation of new products. Hydrogen fluoride gas is dangerous and aqueous HF acid is corrosive and toxic. Also, hydrogen fluoride can be used to manufacture herbicides, fluorescent light bulbs, refrigerants, and so on. Other than this, it also acts as the precursor of several metal fluorides like aluminum fluoride and uranium hexafluoride.Īnhydrous HF has catalyzing properties and is hence used in the process of petroleum alkylation to increase the octane number of petroleum. It acts as a precursor to the halogen fluorine via electrolysis procedure. HF has a molar mass of 20.0064 g/mol and a density of 1.15 g/litre as a gas at 250 C. It has a melting point of -118.50 F and a boiling point of about 670 F. It tends to dissolve in water and the colorless aqueous solution is known as hydrofluoric acid. Hydrogen fluoride is a colorless liquid or a gaseous compound having the chemical formula HF. – Charles Waring Little Walter And His Jukes – My Babe The tune has been a favorite of other bluesmen (Slim Harpo, Buddy Guy, and Freddy King have all recorded it) and even rock bands Led Zeppelin once included it in a medley they recorded for BBC radio in 1969. Considered a delta blues classic, the record also epitomized the “boogie” style with its rhythmic syncopations. An original tune recorded in 1948, the song represented the minimalist aesthetic that was Hooker’s hallmark the only instrument on the record was Hooker’s guitar, on which he strummed guitar chords in a hypnotic, loop-like fashion behind his gravelly bark of a voice. Hooker’s biggest commercial success was during the years 1949 to 1951 when he was in his thirties he put six singles in the US R&B charts, the first of which was “Boogie Chillen,” which went all the way to No. – Charles Waring John Lee Hooker – Boogie Chillen It offers a quintessential example of Johnson’s soulful wail and skeletal guitar accompaniment, and became a touchstone for later blues musicians those who covered it included Peter Green Splinter Group, Eric Clapton, and Gil Scott-Heron. The fact that Johnson died in mysterious circumstances not long afterwards made the record seem prophetic. One of the last recordings he made, released on the Vocalion label in 1938, this classic fable about Satan calling in a debt, helped to fuel the long-held myth that Johnson had made a Faustian pact with the devil at a crossroads, exchanging his soul for musical success. – Brett MilanoĬlick to load video Robert Johnson – Me And The Devil Blues “Thrill Is Gone” wasn’t the first record to fuse blues with pop, but it was the smoothest and most successful to date (hitting No.15 as a pop record) and setting the stage for many crossovers to come. The producer had no qualms about polishing King’s sound, recording him with top-flight studio players (instead of his road band) and, in this case, coaxing out one of his more heartfelt vocals. Producer Bill Szymczyk – yes, the same one who’d make millions a few years later with The Eagles – caused a small revolution when he added a string section to this track, otherwise one of many smooth ballads that BB King recorded in the 60s. While you’re reading, listen to our Best Blues Songs playlist here. Suffice to say that if Robert Johnson had never gone to the crossroads, or if BB King was still feeling a thrill, the world would be a poorer place. Many of the most influential blues songs reverberate to this day, and a few were probably covered by a local band in your town last weekend. Either they were famously covered, or the licks got borrowed, or they schooled the rockers in style and attitude. Without the blues there’d be no rock’n’roll, but certain tracks were especially pivotal. The great blues artists talked, the savviest rockers listened. The natural tempo and timing between Davis and McGee is born out of decades of working together, and the audience is the beneficiary. McGee narrates while performing and can still crack you up with just a look or motion, and with subtlety here. Yet McGee’s Watson is understated, mostly doing case recon for Holmes, allowing the ensemble to shine and deliver a good portion of the laughs. Watson – could you think of anyone else you’d want to play this role? No. Also, he looks great in a deerstalker cap. Bottom line – Davis is loud, overly dramatic (by design and in the best possible way), and he delivers – as always. Did Father demand too much? A new mystery to be solved – another time. It makes you wonder what kind of childhood Holmes must have had. He’s unintentionally funny – and has flashes of insecurity and self-recrimination at any mistake, no matter how small. Davis’s Holmes has all the hyberbolic brilliance you’ve come to expect, not just from Doyle’s perspective, but from a Ludwig character. WatsonĮric Davis, freeFall’s Artistic Director, returns to the stage after an almost four year hiatus – his last appearance being in James Goldman’s classic, The Lion in Winter. Eric Davis as Sherlock Holmes and Matthew McGee as Dr. After a few Ludwig plays, you begin to recognize the style and you’re all in. His humor adds depth and comic relief to Sir Arthur Conan Doyle’s iconic characters. His work is staged over a thousand times a year – and locally at Asolo Rep in Sarasota ( Murder on the Orient Express) and here at freeFall. Playwright, Ken Ludwig loves adapting classics like The Three Musketeers, Murder on the Orient Express, and of course, Arthur Conan Doyle’s The Hound of the Baskervilles. Can they do it in two hours? Call me an optimist. Are hounds into all that material stuff? The crime-solving game is afoot, and Holmes and Watson have about 40 potential suspects to investigate. Could history be repeating itself? The Baskerville Mansion and estate are at stake. The myth is that a huge and vicious hound lurking on the English Moors is responsible – just as it was for a Baskerville ancestor. Two of the Baskervilles have been murdered. A murder mystery set on the 1890s Devonshire Moors and environs, with a mythic murderous hound and great performances, Baskerville is altogether a wonderfully entertaining theater experience. It’s a bandwagon you’ll have no difficulty jumping on. Pete to sold out crowds and great acclaim. Ken Ludwig’s Baskerville opened this past week at freeFall Theatre in St. Rathbone and Nigel Bruce were my father’s favorite sleuthing duo – and by genetic osmosis, mine as well. More than 84 actors have portrayed Sherlock Holmes on stage, screen and radio since 1908 – from current day Robert Downey Jr, Benedict Cumberbatch and Will Ferrell (no lie), back to Christopher Lee, Peter Cushing, Larry Hagman, Roger Moore and of course Basil Rathbone (just love saying that name).
